CHAMPIONS Club AZ began the defence of their Division One title with a win on the road at Warrington outfit Eagle Sports, writes Rob Wood.

That made up in part for last week’s five-goals thrashing against Northwich Villa, formerly Woodley FC, in the annual Memorial Trophy curtain raiser.

Villa, runners-up last term, were surprisingly held at home by Billinge.

Knutsford started the new season as they finished the last, in goalscoring form, as they put four past Gamesley at Manchester Road.

Elsewhere front runner Martin Bell hit a hat-trick in Middlewich Town’s 4-0 win at Styal.

Pilkington were in the goals too, scoring three without reply against Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads which is the same margin of victory for Greenalls in their win over Rylands.

Top tier newcomers Lostock Gralam enjoyed a winning start to life at a higher level at the expense of Garswood United.

Meanwhile the other promoted team, Tarporley Victoria, were involved in the day’s only draw at home to Golborne Sports.

Cheshire League debutants Rudheath Social picked up three points on their debut following a single-goal success at Congleton Town reserves.

Division Two’s other newcomers, Runcorn Town reserves, shared six goals at Crewe FC.

The day’s high scorers were Grappenhall Sports, who defeated local rivals Daten 4-0 at Stockton Lane, a tally matched by Monk FC in their win over Maine Road reserves.

Poynton, who shaded a five-goals thriller at Malpas, while Denton Town scored the only goal of the game at Whitchurch Alport.

Greg Lumsden’s double helped Barnton to a share of the spoils against Moore United at Town Field.
